New engine in 90-92 Camaro?

This is going to be my first car. My budget is about 6k. I was looking for a newer model v6 camaro but you just cant get one with a decent amount of miles for $6,000. I've been talking with my father, and he brought up the idea of getting an older model car and replacing the engine and transmission.

I'm thinking about getting a 90-92 camaro RS or z28 with minimal body damage and then dropping a whole new eng and tranny in like he said. Is there any problems I do not know about that I will probably encounter putting a 300-350hp eng in it? I'm not sure if I could like drop an LT1 or LS1 in or if I will have to get another GM engine? I believe I am just going to buy a new one instead of rebuilt. I am open to all advice and criticism so please let me have it. Thanks!

Get yourself an 89-92 Camaro (with 305/auto combo - about $2-3000), Get the 300hp GM crate engine ($2200) and a B&M TH700R4 ($1300) and you'll be tearing the rear-end-up in no time!

Is the B&M you are talking about a transmission? Also, If i buy one thats automatic, can i make it into a manual since i am buying a new transmission?

I've been looking throught autotraders for 89-92 IROC-Z's and z28's. Does anyone have any experience with these and know if there are certain problems i need to watch out for, and the such? Thanks alot.

If you want a stick car, buy one. It will be far cheaper than trying to convert an automatic car. The swap can be done, you'll need to source a trans, 3rd gen f-body bellhousing, correct flywheel, clutch, clutch master & slave cylinders with correct hose, shifter, and a console.
A much easier and cheaper route would be buying a stick car, put in a T56 trans from a 4th gen (handles much more power) using an adapter kit w/speedometer converter.

Forget the Z-cars and IROCs, buy an RS!! You're going to chuck most of what makes it a Z28 anyway so why pay the much-higher insurance? Do your mods then go get the grill, taillamps, hood, and wheels from a bone-yard for the looks. It works on my Camaro!

I've been looking around and I do not think that building one myself is the right choice. Nor do I think I have the money. Just the car, engine, and transmission would take up all the money I have. Doesnt even cover the cost of installation, or the carb and manifolds that the engine doesnt come with. I've got some questions about camaros in general that I would like to ask. Someone around here who is knowledgeable have AIM?

I've been looking at newer model z28's and v6's... Could someone give me some general ideas on when engines and transmissions start to go out in camaros? I know it all depends on how the car is treated and if the oil was changed regularly, etc., but I'm just trying to get a general idea.

Right now I'm really considering getting a cheap honda or import car when I turn 16 and then saving up more money and selling the import and getting a camaro once i have more money.

I'm open for opinions so guys please let me know what you think is a wise choice. Thanks for all your help.
