Unhappy The Class Of 2005

This made me feel old; I remember most of this stuff!

Just in case you weren't feeling old enough today, this will
certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in
Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the Faculty a sense of

the mindset of this year's incoming freshman.

Here is this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were
born in 1983.

They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did
not know he had ever been shot.

They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.

There has been only one Pope in their lifetime.

They were 10 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the
Cold War.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Tianamen Square means nothing to them.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums.

The statement "You sound like a broken record" means nothing to
them.

They have never owned a record player.

They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was
introduced when they were 1 year old.

They have always had an answering machine.

Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen
a black and white TV.

They have always had cable.

There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA was.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

They don't know what a cloth baby diaper is, or know about the
"Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial.

Feeling old Yet? There's more:

They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony.

Roller skating has always meant inline for them.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. (The correct answer,
by the way, is Ork)

They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a
Camel," or "De plane, de plane!"

They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. was.

Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not
bands.

There has always been MTV.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

I'm that young, and I remember all of those things - I even still have the 13 channel TV set with the Atari 2600 still hooked up to it, I've got a record player (which has an 8-track deck, but I have no tapes for it) I remember seeing the Berlin wall come down on TV - and we had an air-popper. My friends still has BETA, And I'll tell you who shot J.R. for $50...

Not as much meaning for people outside the US. I remember most of the historical stuff happening, and my TV has always had 5 channels. Fuck all people have cable over here.

Wait a minute... The incoming college Freshmen this year should have been born in 1984... I was born in 82 and I will be in my 4th year of college this Fall. But if I figure out their YOB by my brother's birthyear, he will be entering college NEXT fall, and he was born in 85... Oh bother. I don't get it.

Anyway, I'll admit that there are a few things on there that I don't remember, but we had a BETA machine, I played PacMan on Atari (as well as Caterpillar and DigDug), and I had a CareBears record player. Although my mom has it at school right now, and her kids last year said "Whoa, that's the biggest CD I've EVER seen" when she pulled out some records.

i'm 18 and i know about most of that stuff...lets see..i knew about regan and his attempted assination..i was 6 during operation desert storm...i remember the challenger tragedy cuz it was on a punky brewster episode....well the pope thing's true....i know alot about the cold war and i remember the soviet union breaking apart with the berlin wall and watching boris yeltsin become president of russia.....Tianamen Square:1989 big riot between the govt. and university students famous picture of a chinese university student standing in front of the direct path of a tank....i know about glass bottles and metal bottlecaps because i drink alot of malta and they're still like that....ATARI WAS COOL .......vinyl albums and records were and still are in my house...my mom used the "do i sound like a broken record to you?" line to me every time ......we had a record player, can't seem to find it.....have played pong through the arcades(my friend victor owns the arcade machine and i have it for sega) i own a pong machine( 10cents at a garage sale still works) oh yes and DIG DUG and the original FROGGER..and Q*BERT!!!!! .........my aunt and uncle have an 8-track somewhere in storage; man are those things ugly.....haven't heard of the compact disc till the early 90's.....haven't owned a cd till 1999.......didn't get an answering machine till 92....i own a dial tv with the rabbit ears on top of it..still works perfectly...my 1st tv was black and white, was made in 1978, and it still works, it's in my grandma's room.......didn't get cable till i was 5 or 6 when we moved to randolph from mattapan.......i know what BETA is and unforunately ours doesn't work anymore.....i know about not having a remote and IT SUX!!!.....my little brother michael used to get the cloth diapers.....I used to laugh my ass off at the old lady in the commercial for the medical alert shit when she said "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up" and also at the old dude who said "i'm having chest pains".......haven't owned a walkman till i was 8....used to own roller skates, never had the one with the skate key though......i used to think that michael jackson was the shit so i know about when he was black, part of jackson 5, and when he got burnt during the pepsi commercial....i think that Johnny Carson was a better host on the Tonight Show than Jay Leno......Jordache jeans kicked ass and so did Gitanos(i used to like looking at the girls in those jeans when i was a kid 2 ya know ) ........and seeing how you guys were cool to have the jet puff machines and had the kettle...how about JIFFY POP that stuff is still good!........saw jaws and couldn't swim till i was about 7....i know about the whole America/Iran hostage thing.....was always too scared to put in contacts because of these things.....Mork and Mindy was cool,i liked Mindy's Jeep .......where's the beef? that's Wendy's: I'd walk a mile for a camel? i'm guessing camel cigarettes.....De plane De plane? definately Fantasy Island(i wish that this list had something about knight rider ).......you're right i don't know who J.R is but i'd like to know......i know about Chicago and Boston being bands, but not the others.....MTV came around in 81, so you're right it's always been around even if i was introduced to it when i got cable.....and yes i know about Typewriters and Electronic Typewriters....so with a couple of exceptions, i sometimes feel like i'm the oldest teen there is even if i was born in 85

Yeah, I really feel deprived from all the 'quality' programming on US cable. I was subjected to it in Canada. Ended up just watching heaps of DVDs.

Are you serious? Mork was the alien from Mork and Mindy, and J.R. was the jerk from Dallas that everybody hated - the Simpsons even satired it with the "Who Shot Mr. Burns" episodes.
