1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

The cruise control and brake light have both stopped working and the check engine is constantly on. From reading previous post here and on other forums, I get the impression that this may be related. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scan tool (i.e., GM Tech 2) that will work on this vehicle due to the fact that it has the OBD 1.5. I am hoping have access to one within the next week or so.

In the meantime, I know that it is a shot in the dark, but I am going to try and replace the brake switch and cruise control servo. Others have had success resolving the cruise control issue with this fix. Any advise would be helpful.

Here are some pictures of what I believe is the brake switch:

Image 2a.jpg

I need help identifying "A" and "B". The image GM04-357.jpg I received from dealership only shows one item (circled in red) and it is identified as the cruise control switch.

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

I just wanted to update this post:

"A" is the Cruise Control Release Switch and "B" is the Brake Light Switch.

Has anyone ever replaced these?

Btw, is anyone else having problems seeing the 3 pictures I posted... I can only see one of them or is it my computer?

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

I see one pic...when I click on it to blow it up, I see nothing.....

The stop lamp switch is the one with two connectors.....

Are all your brake lights not working or just the center stop lamp?

Have you checked your stop lamp fuse? Power comes from the orange wire, do you have power at the orange wire? There are two harness connectors.....disconnect the harness with the orange wire.....check it for power with a test light...... if it doesn't light on the orange wire, check the cfuse....if it does, jumper the orange wire to the white wire...do the brake lights now come on? If they do, then you need a new switch....

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

Thank you for the reply Tech II. As far as I could tell, it was only the center stop lamp, but I will have to recheck it again. With regards to all the fuses, they seemed fine "visually". I checked the ones in the fuse box on the driver side and the ones on the passenger side (on the wall behind the glove box). Btw, which fuse is it and where is it located, I will double check.

I will see what I can do with your instructions, but that maybe a little above my pay grade. I know it sounds easy but when it comes to electrical I am not very good. I will see if I can get a friend of mine to help me out.

What is the best way to remove the switches. The retainer clips located on the opposite side are a pain in the ***. Complicating things, is that I need to remove both switches simultaneously because of the white piece of plastic in the picture. Should I try to "unscrew" one at a time?

Btw, I tried to re-upload the other two photo and I get an upload error. It tells me that the photos are already in the thread. I even tried renaming the photos. Any suggestions?

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

Tech II,

I jumped orange wire to the white wire and the rear brakes stay on; however, the middle brake light still does not come. Does this indicate the brake light switch needs replacing?

Thank you in advance.

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

I need advise on what to do next. It turns out that the light bulb on the brake light was bad and the check engine light was due to a bad throttle position sensor (TPS).

Unfortunately, the cruise does still not engage and there were no other codes. If the cruise control servo, cruise control switch, or cruise control release switch are bad, will there be a code?

Btw, can anyone provide a diagram and schematics of the fuses. I checked the ones under the dash on the driver side and the ones on the passenger side behind the glove box and they all seemed fine.

Thank you in advance.

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

Ok, the brake switch is ok, because the other brake lights work.....so just replacing the center stop bulb(s), should take care of that.....

Are your cruise buttons on the steering wheel, or on the multifunction switch?

Was the TPS repaired? Code cleared and gone? If it is, not sure if that code can inhibit the cruise....

On this year, I don't think there are codes set, but '95 was a funny year for diagnostics, so not sure.....

I have seen an out of adjusted cruise brake switch cause problems.....have seen steering wheel controls have bad on/off switch.....

Re: 1995 LeSabre - Cruise Control issue

Tech II, you were 100% on the money that a faulty TPS could inhibit the cruise control. I finally got around to replacing it and that seems to have resolved the issue.

Thank you again!
