Multifunction switch replacement

How difficult is it to replace the multifunction switch (turn signal, wiper control, high beam, etc) on a 2004 Eddie Bauer Expedition? Switch is $100 at AutoZone. Anyone try it?

Re: Multifunction switch replacement

I've done a lot of other Fords. I'll look at my '05 Expy in the morning to see if it looks the same and let you know.

Re: Multifunction switch replacement

It looks about the same as I have on my Sable that I replaced the multi-function switch in. I disconnect the battery first, no sense in possibly shorting something. Then you may want to remove the relay for the airbag. I couldn't tell you which one it is, and I usually don't do that, but several others recommend doing it. Then I take a rag to place over the outside of the key guard so I don't scratch it as I grab it with channel lock pliers to pull off. You could also use a screwdriver to pry it off, but I have messed up the plastic doing that before. Underneath the column are some screws that need to be removed. Now you can separate the top and bottom halves of the cover by prying them apart. They have clips that bring them together, that is why they don't just come apart after removing the screws. You may have to move the tilt around or put the key in the ignition to unlock the gear shift lever to move it around also to get the covers off. The multi switch is held in place by its own screw and you follow the wire from it to the connector that you just disconnect. I have taken the multi switches apart and cleaned connectors, removed melted plastic and pulled to extend springs back to get them to work again if a new one wasn't in stock. Just be careful of the springs behind the contacts, when they pop out you don't lose them.
