What is the most effective way to increase torque and low to mid end power?

shorter gears and a cam with a lower lift tuned for low end power

It's not lift that matters it's duration. Less duration=more torque and power at lower RPM's, but less top end. Less duration + more lift=even better low end torque and power. More duration and less lift=screaming machine built for power.

you sure about that...doesn't vtec use i higher lift cam at high rpm and a low lift for low end?

Positive, yes it is higher lift but the small lobes are rediculously small lift. So it's not really that much, the large lobes are like .412 intake, .379 exhaust lift. I forgot to include more duration high lift- best of both worlds but your engine has to be built to handle it, most stock engines cannot handle high lift high duration cams. Need to have beefier springs.

a stroker kit too. Lengthens your stroke (duh) therefore slowing down your engine and losing power, but gaining a crapload of torque. That's useful for when you want to ultimatley make more torque than power.

I'm pretty sure stroker kits increase power.

well yeah, pretty much any aftermarket kit will. But iirc the purpose of stroker kits is to increase torque over power.

True, the length from center increases so torque increases, but I think it's just an easier way to increase displacement.

Stroking is not going to increase power.

The power you can develop is decided by airflow through the engine, there are lots of ways to increase airflow and power.

Whenever you bore, and/or stroke an engine, you are putting a bigger displacement engine under the same cylinder head(s) with the same induction and exhaust system. So torque will increase, but it will run out of breath sooner. It will develop the same power but at lower RPM, because the airflow through the engine is still going to be limited to the same amount.

So yes, boring or stroking will increase low and mid range torque.

So will positive displacement supercharging, or increasing the compression ratio, if that is feasible.

You could also try advancing the cam, but do not expect huge gains when doing this.
