Alternator idea?

I have a 2000 3500 series truck with the 5.7 auto.

The wiring on the alternator is simple, but what is the little wire's function? I'm assuming voltage reference, but what should be the proper measurement of it?

Reason I'm asking is because this particular truck has had issues charging, after multiple alternators over the last year. The dash guage reads just over 12, and at the battery it's more towards the 14.1 mark. I know the dash is some ambiguous reading, but I know that the reading should be a little higher?

I'm also looking to do a dual alternator setup as the truck is also a plow truck in the winter. Possibly having one batt as the main for the truck and one for just the plow.

I would install 2 batteries or one very large alternator . 260 amp alternator and the proper belt drive is more cost than adding 2 batteries. In winter with temps below 20 deg f the battery has less power available and takes longer to charge. with 2 batteries you will have the power to operate the plow pump. also this will reduce power surges on the alternator. if you find that the batteries are not enough then adding the large alternator with them should do it.

things that owners do not understand is the wire amp sizes on our vehicles do need be increased to handle the current demand of these non OEM aftermarket high current installs. this would also apply to the 1000watt sound systems.
