Re: Need help in finding a scan tool

You won't find any sort of laptop or scan tool that can pinpoint an "exact electrical problem", but there are several software packages, many for free, that along with an OBDII dongle (for 1996 and newer vehicles), can access powertrain diagnostic codes. These diagnostic codes are far from pinpointing an exact electrical issue. Instead they will identify a circuit that the PCM has used to identify an issue. The codes certainly won't tell a shop exactly what the problem is though.

Re: Need help in finding a scan tool

They are likely referring to a code reader. Your mechanic has one and will use it as step one in the diagnostic process. The trouble code is a starting point. The code identifies a circuit or sensor that isn't performing correctly. Its up to the mechanic to figure out why. No tool can say "fix this."
