Coolant leak but no visible sign of leak

I've had to replace my radiator twice due to it overheating. I am noticing coolant level going down but I'm not seeing any signs of an external leak. My garage is saying it is probably internal and going into the engine. Says I probably have to replace the head gasket but that will be very expensive.

Could I get some further feedback on what it could be and what else I could do? I am also getting a check engine light on a "lean mixture" issue. Not sure if they are related.

Thanks

The lean mixture code shouldn't be related.. that is more than likely a MAF cleaning or replacement issue.

As far as the coolant issue.. this could be a bunch of things, unfortunately. Outside of a head gasket, it could be a tiny methodical leak in one of many places. Check your water pump, radiator hoses, overflow tank, and even the thermostat housing for any white residue.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. What is MAF concerning the lean mixture?

MAF = Mass Air Flow Sensor. It's a little plug that should be located right before the box with your air filter. You can get a can of MAF cleaner at any auto parts stores and simply unplug it, clean it and wait for it to dry, then plug it back in. A cheap start to solving that error code, and it should be done from time to time anyway.

If all rubber hoses & plastic coolant recovery tank is good, try http://www.steelseal.com

Caution - Make sure your electric coolant fans are working proper with the HVAC on high cool max.

Any boil over will cause a coolant shortage.

Does the car smell like burning coolant when you start it? and drive? Do you sparkplugs have excessive amounts of residue on them? Some mroe than others? There is a possible "temp to permanent" fix .. my honest mechanic . com KW block sealer costs 8 dollars, worth a try; run for 500 + miles, you will not have boil over or freeze protection, follow directions except run for 00+ miles
