Stripped Primer with Brake Fluid and have an unusual side effect
Hello,
Painted my plastic under tray on my newest project with Tamiya Primer then Testors 1 Coat SG Black Lacquer. Well screwed up the SG Black and removed it with 91% Alchohol...worked out great. The Testors paint wore of like warm syrup. The primer did not budge but was scuffed up and scratched so it needed to be stripped. I soaked the parts in Brake Fluid for 2Hrs and the primer nearly melted off, again no problems. As I was cleaning and drying the parts I noticed several "flecks" of a hard salt like material all over the tray and rear diffuser. What is this? Its dryed hard to the surface and can be scratched off with a finger nail etc. Is there a way to remove these flecks and not have to sand each on off? Thanks Ryan |

Re: Stripped Primer with Brake Fluid and have an unusual side effect
I've never experienced this, I don't think, though I have noticed that brake fluid leaves a foggy residue on my model. I would just sand it off with sandpaper, since whatever paint error probably razed the plastic anyway. I almost hate to suggest it, but maybe leave it in a little longer? I suspect it is some sort of accretion of the paint carrier? Maybe?
In any case, I probably don't know the full story behind your name on AF, but I sure do like it! Have you shared any builds yet?

Post a pic or two. Like willmo suggested i would sand it down and throughly clean with soap and water.

Re: Stripped Primer with Brake Fluid and have an unusual side effect
I've had something similar with CSC once. After the paint was stripped I scrubbed the parts with a toothbrush in the sink with soap and water then let them air dry on some paper towel. Hours later I noticed that there was like you described a white salty looking substance on several area of the parts. I just chalked it up to residue left from the primer that the car was painted with. Mine was on a diecast I bought so I don't know the type of paint or primer used. On mine I just scratched the residue off with a hobby knife and then sanded. For yours on plastic, I'd try the soap and water route and just scrub with a toothbrush before sanding.

Re: Stripped Primer with Brake Fluid and have an unusual side effect
Thanks for the replies, I'll post some pics soon.
I'm afraid I dont have any car builds, last one was in 1987. Since then I have been a airplane and tank modeler. Lately I wanted to finally learn the car side of the hobby. Here are some links to some builds...warning they are not shiny! http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?...=186356&page=2 http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?...5&ord=0&page=5 I was also lucky enough to get a book published, co authored with a friend. http://www.amazon.com/OPERATION-IRAQ...2939877&sr=8-2 Here is a airplane... http://web.ipmsusa3.org/content/bac-lightning-mk-1a-mk2 My name originated when I first started entering contests I always seemed to get a 2nd or 3rd place. So the name was born...The 3rd Placer. Dont have that problem any more with Armor or AC models...but cars I might as well be the 10th Placer as I'm trying to learn all I can. My 1st build log on this site was a false start...I tried to begin a S27 F1 GTR, but am in over my head....so I started a Nissan R34 Xanavia build. Thanks for reading and I will post pics of the primer problem. BTW the fleck appeared in the Brake Solution and could be moved around with a tooth brush but simply landed on another portion of the car..very strange. Ryan |

Here is the pic...
![]() image by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr What looks like white residue is actually hard crusted particles. As I said before these particles were present in the solution of Brake Fluid...they appeared when I started tooth brushing the primer out of nooks and crannies. Ryan |

Re: Stripped Primer with Brake Fluid and have an unusual side effect
i do get that problem, though with 99% isopropyl alcohol and i'm rinsing the soaked parts under running tap water. the crusted things though seem to be paint particles that clumped together, and i usually wetsand them off with 600 grit.
