Complete: Tamiya 1/24 Toyota TS020 Le Mans ‘99

What a great kit this is! Really well detailed, excellent fit, over all a joy to build.

I’ve used the SMS cf template set and Studio27 p/e, with all Tamiya paints including TS49 (as called out) for the red. All the decals are Tamiya which were very thin and I made a couple of mistakes, but they’re not too noticeable.

This car is the pole-sitter at Le Mans 1999 which is the race people remember for the flying Mercedes. Toyota came very close to winning (with the Nr3 car), but this car crashed out overnight, as did Nr2. The car was fast, McNish clocked at 354kph (220mph) between chicanes. Car 3 was fighting for the lead until the last hour and finished a distant second.

I love the look of this car and hope you do too.

Anybody know the idea behind the front wheel arches being open on the inside? Obviously it's airflow (duh) but I'm not sure what pressure it's supposed to alleviate. Maybe to keep high pressure from building up above the wheel, raising the body front and thereby decreasing front downforce? If it worked, I wonder why nobody else has done it.

It looks like the paint pulled away from the panel lines, maybe a light light grey panel wash? Beautiful build!
