05 Impala will not Crank Over
All of a sudden after driving the car the day before, my 05 Impala would not crank the next morning. Headlights and Dash, Radio turn on, but nothing when I turn the key. I pulled the Battery and Starter and took it to a guy I know who checked them both out and they are fine.
What other issues could I be looking at? Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem? Issues like this before on other cars have always been the batter or starter, but I have not had a starter problem on a vehicle in years. Kind of at a loss of where to look. I am going to go through the fuse panel tonight after work and also check for voltage at the Starter Solenoid when someone turns the key. Mark |

Re: 05 Impala will not Crank Over
I see the sticky thread post about the security light. I did not notice if it was turned on or not. I will check that tonight when I put it back together. Any other ideas anyone might have?

Re: 05 Impala will not Crank Over
The passlock causes no starts/runs, not no cranks. What does crank over mean to you? Means crank to me fire up to some...

Re: 05 Impala will not Crank Over
Good point can me different things to some.
What I mean is the starter would not function. I turned the key and nothing. So last night, I put the starter back in. Cleaned all the starter connections. The ground wire connection on the Engine Block. Nothing looked bad at all. So I took every fuse/relay out of the underhood fuse block, and cleaned off the terminals. All fuses looked fine. Reconnected the Battery and the thing started right up. The starter cranked on the first attempt. I shut it off and started it several times with no issues. Drove it to work today, no problems and I shut it off and it started right back up. Going to get the alternator checked at lunch today, just because. Really scratching my head right now.

Re: 05 Impala will not Crank Over
one of the connectors to the BCM could have come loose or the BCM itself could be bad. On my 03 the BCM is up by the steering column/intermediate shaft. Have to remove the kick panel with the courtosy light. could also be the shift lock / pcm / wiring .....etc

Re: 05 Impala will not Crank Over
It's poassible that you may have had a bad connection at the battery or starter/starter solenoid......by taking both out, and reconnecting them, you could have eliminated the problem, if it doesn't happen again.....
But you are correct with one thing.......BEFORE you ever remove the starter check for power at the purple wire to the starter solenoid with the key in the crank position......will save you a lot of work... |

Does the lights and gages on the dash go out when you try and start the car?
Is the security light on? My ex had that happen in an 05' Grand AM Pontiac. I reprogrammed the BCM and the car started right up. Try this and tell us what you found. Car in bright sunlight so the auto headlights stay off. Connect a charger to the battery so that the battery stays charged. Observe correct polarity. Put the key in the ignition and put down the window down in case the power locks activate. Then you can still get in the car. Try and start the car. Shut the key off and take out of the ignition. Put back in and turn the ignition on showing the lights and the gages are on. Leave SIT for 30 mins. All accessories and the radio are OFF. The security light will go out. Take the key out and put back in. Start the car. If the BCM was defective you re-programmed it. If you still have issues take to a good mechanic. Everyone here has good ideas. Give this a try and tell us what you found. John
