Brake booster replace

Hi, Need instructions on how to get old brake booster off a 1991 Lumina with a 3.1 engine... Can't figure out what tool to use to remove the four bolts holding it to fire wall as clearance is so tight a swivel socket won't go on nuts. Also, will steering collum have to come down to get brake peddle loose? Bought some of those wrench end thingies that you stick a 3/8 drive extension on that favors a distributor lock down wrench i'm hoping will work..Almost no brakes, and hear lots of air at brake peddle.Engine races when brake is applied.Bleeding didn't help, so I figure it's the booster...Any help would be appreciated....

The booster is held to the body with a twist-on, spring-clip arrangement. You'll build a simple "special tool" to twist it back off the firewall.

Boosters are a common problem on the early W body. I replaced boosters on a '92 and a '93 Lumina Euro 3.4 which had a different failure than yours, but were still defective. Be very careful of the brake light switch. You may have to drop the steering column in order to re-set the adjustment of the brake light switch. It is very hateful on my '92. Write-up and lots of photos starting at Post 11 ('93), and Post 18 ('92) at:

Re: Brake booster replace

You done good.

My '92 kicked my ass due to the hateful design of the brake switch. The '93 wasn't so bad.
