Crankshaft Position Sensor

So I took my 2001 Pontiac into the inspection station today with no seeming problems and it failed emissions due to a faulty crankshaft position sensor.

I read on replacement and am beginning that process. The only other question is my TRAC OFF light above the radio has come on as well. Seemingly at the same time as the check engine light came on. Can a faulty crankshaft position sensor cause the TRAC OFF light to come on?

Does the coordination of both the faulty crankshaft position sensor code along with the TRAC OFF light coming on simultaneously lead me down a different direction?

I would hate to change the CS Pos sensor only to find out there is another problem. The car is effectively sold I just need to make certain I fix this problem.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor

Well, your CE light is on, so a PCM code is set......do you know the exact number? Pxxxx?

If the CE light is on, yes the TRAC OFF light could come on, depending on the code.....

Just remember, the problem is not necessarily the sensor the code is named after....ANYTHING in the entire circuit could be the problem that set the code, like a connection, a wire, sensor, module it's connected to.......

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor

P0336

I removed the wheel in an effort to see how difficult changing it myself would be. The rear one on the engine block looks impossible to get to the other I need to get a pully.

I put the wheel back on to move the car and now everything seems back to normal except my check engine light is still on. I am debating pulling the battery line to reset the codes and see if things are truly normal again.

The care drove fine with the P0336 light on and the tach not working.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor

P0336 is set by the sensor behind the harmonic balancer, not the one in the side of the block.....

Maybe this will help:

Page 2 and 3 in that link are broken to me? Is that just my computer? I can try using a different browser.
