Turbo's

Hello everyone,

Why do car manufacturers use multiple turbos on one engine?

Usually to eliminate turbo spool up lag.

Re: Turbo's

Two small units can spool up faster than a single, larger unit. Faster spool results in better engine response.

The other option is to use a small turbo and a large turbo. This is called a "sequential" setup. The small turbo provides instant power and the larger unit takes over at higher RPM.

A single turbo setup is generally cheaper and more reliable.

Re: Turbo's

And if the engine is a v-style engine, it's common to install one turbo on each banks' exhaust manifold. The described sequential setup is more common on an inline engine with a single bank of cylinders.
