valve seats ?
My wifes 2000 chevy metro has smoked on start-up for years. Its just at the point where I need to do something about it. Alot of smoke , but, start-up only. It has 170,000 miles runs good. Is there a link where I can go step by step to complete the job, I don't mind taking the head off if I have to.

Re: valve seats ?
probably just need new valve stem seals but takes a special compressor to remove spring and head has to come off, machine shop can tell you if the guides are also bad

Re: valve seats ?
I'm guessing it's a four cylinder, the G13BB 16 valve engine is famous for bad valve stem seals. It's possible to replace the seals without removing the head using air pressure or filling up the cylinder with string to hold the valve closed while you take off the springs and replace the seal. At 170K you probably need a valve job and rings though, do a compression and leak down test. You're probably better off going ahead and doing a rebuild.
