Proper Ride Height

Does anyone know what the proper height of the rear bumper is when the ELC system is working correctly for a 2000 Venture LT?

Thanks,

ew

Re: Proper Ride Height

P21570R15 is the tire size that I have. I think that the LT is the longest of the Ventures, but I'll measure the wheel base if there are more than one for the LT.

Re: Proper Ride Height

Incorrect trim heights can cause bottoming out over bumps. Incorrect trim heights can cause possible damage to the suspension components and symptoms similar to those produced when there is a problem with the wheel alignment. Check the trim heights when diagnosing suspension complaints and before checking the wheel alignment.

Perform the following steps before measuring the trim height:
  • Ensure that the fuel level is a minimum 1/8 of a full tank.
  • Ensure that the correct size tires are on the vehicle.
  • Set the tire pressures to the pressure shown on the tire placard. The tire placard is located on the driver's door.
  • Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface, such as an alignment rack.
  • Close the doors.
  • Close the hood.
  • Close the liftgate.
Important: All trim height measurement are taken vertical to the ground. Trim height measurement within 10 mm (0.4 in) are considered correct

  1. Use your hands in order to lift the front bumper of the vehicle up approximately 38 mm (1.5 in). Gently remove your hands in order to allow the vehicle to lower.
  2. Use your hands in order to push the front bumper of the vehicle down approximately 38 mm (1.5 in). Remove your hands in order to allow the vehicle to rise.
  3. Measure the J dimension for the left and right side of the vehicle 604 mm (24 in.) from the centerline of the FRONT wheel (1).
  4. Replace the front springs to correct the front trim height as necessary.
  5. Use your hands in order to lift the rear bumper of the vehicle up approximately 38 mm (1.5 in). Gently remove your hands in order to allow the vehicle to lower.
  6. Use your hands in order to push the front bumper of the vehicle down approximately 38 mm (1.5 in). Remove your hands in order to allow the vehicle to rise.
  7. Measure the K dimension for the left and right side of the vehicle 560 mm (22 in.) from the centerline of the REAR wheel (2).
  8. Replace the rear springs to correct the rear trim height as necessary.

  3. Measure the Z dimension for the left and right side of the vehicle. The Z dimension is the vertical distance measured between the centerline of the lower control arm rear bolt (1) and the bottom of the ball joint.
  7. Measure the D dimension for the left and right side of the vehicle.
  8. Replace the rear springs to correct the rear trim height as necessary.
D = 5.78-6.57 in.

J = 9.29-10.07 in

K = 10.35-11.14 in.

Z = 2.28-3.07 in

These numbers are good for extended van with air ride...

Re: Proper Ride Height

Thanks for the detailed information. It looks like the J and K levels are proper. Haven't checked D and Z yet.

Problem is that the compressor for the shocks is running too often for too long. Finally took a look at it up close and it appears that an air hose to the right shock is not connected to the compressor. Not sure if the 'T' it should be connected to is broken or if it should plug in somewhere else.

Looks like it should connect to the opposite side from the hose indicated by the blue arrow. But I don't quite know what to think of the part indicated by the red (sort-of) circle.

Thanks,
ew

Re: Proper Ride Height

I would say the hose goes to the "t"...not sure about the circled part, is it maybe the mount for the "t"?
