03 GLI Engine Shuts off While driving when low on fuel

2003 Jetta GLI 2.8 142K. When I get low on fuel (two bars or less) the engine will shut off. The electronics still work fine. You have to turn the key off and pump the gas lightly to start again. It did the same thing sitting at my house yesterday. This hard starting is very similar to when the coolant sensor went back in 06. However no trouble code this time. I had the alternator changed last year too. It did it before that I just don't let the fuel get that low. My wife likes to though. Thanks for any ideas.
