looking at a Silverado

2000 Silverado 2500 LS
180,000 miles
6.0L, auto
4x4
towing brake
power seat
headlight strobes

Owner says that it doesn't have any rust or scratches (we'll see).
$5900

I've been trying to find information on this truck and I'm having trouble. Some places I search don't show a 2500 with 4WD. Other times it won't show a 2000 model with the 6.0L engine.

thoughts/ suggestions?
fair price?

Re: looking at a Silverado

one thing I was trying to find was fuel mileage (went to fueleconomy.gov) but it doesn't give the option of a 2500 with 4WD. There's a 1500 4x4 option on that website. I've got pictures and it's clearly a 2500 LS. Owner says it's 4x4.

tl:dr
realistic fuel economy in this extended cab truck with 4x4, 6.0L, auto trans.?

A C2500 is 2wd & a K2500 is 4wd.

my 2000 1500 4X4 5.3L gets 18-19 MPG MAX on the hywy. the 2500 6L will get 16 MPG max.

the 2500 has / is a much heavier frame. it is very strong and a good haul/tow/plow truck. the area these rust will be the rear rocker panel . GM forgot to put a drain hole and the end/rear of the rockers.

only use synthetic engine oil. these engines last a long time with synthetic. also be sure that the coolant system is clean and use the MAX % of coolant for corrosion protection . 65 % not 50 %.

??? Why? Synthetic oil does not guaranty that the engine will last longer, I'm coming up on 249,000 miles using only conventional oil and Fram, yes I said Fram oil filters. Change my oil every time my truck tells me too us sally anywhere between 6,0000-7,0000 miles. Planning on changing my spark plugs, it's been about 140,000 miles LOL, everything on the engine is original including the plug wires, I only replace something when it breaks but I will never buy a 2007 and up Silverado and hope the 2014 model is really all new like they say. This is the best and most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Just my opinion.

the reason I use it is like I stated before cheaper better mileage go 2 x as long on oil changes faster starts no sludge . I pay 30.00 for 6qts when on sale that 5.oo/qt. reg oil is 3.50/qt. then about 1mpg more on the fuel.

regular oil is fine but if you go more than 3500mi you can get into problems.

my 1983 went 380,ooo mi. reg oil. but that was a iron block. alum moves too much you need the synthetic to handle the heat [hot spots] .quiet on cold start unlike regular oil in the 5.3L block. these are things I found BECAUSE I GAVE REGULAR OIL A GO AT 7MILES ON ENGINE. engine runs smoother quieter now at 140,ooomi.

so after I jumped on your trashing of synthetic I remembered how you stated you use valvoline high mileage oil. do you actually know what your using ? this is what I found :

"MaxLife high mileage motor oil extends the life of higher mileage engines by fighting the four major causes of breakdown - leaks, deposits, sludge and friction. The synthetic blend formula contains our Multi-Life™ additive system designed to combat these problems unique to older engines. In fact, no leading conventional motor oil is formulated to protect higher mileage engines better."

so what are you using ? this is a synthetic oil .

As far as I know it's a synthetic blend which I thought is half conventional and half synthetic?
You say I can get in trouble going more then 3,500 miles in between changes? How do you explain my 249,000 miles on original engine and transmission? I'm not trying to beat up on you jCat because I know you've been a great help for many people on this forum. I just think that full synthetic oil is over rated, yes, I have the in famous piston slap and it may or may not disappear using full synthetic but It's been doing it since I've owned the truck which equals 145,000 miles it doesn't hurt the engine.

Re: looking at a Silverado

the oil your using has synthetic oils in it . the oil manufacturer of your oil recommends changing the oil at the 4000mile mark. because it is a blend , they call it high mileage oil, not synthetic.this is because it would get into false advertising if they said it was synthetic so they call it a blended oil .

if you used a true conventional oil and operated at the oil change intervals you have gone your engine would not be running as well as it is now. additives make a big difference with how well the oil protects.

I pay $30 for 6 qts of mobil 1 synthetic 5-30wt . I go 8,ooomi on the oil changes.

I get the oil at costco when on sale. since I now see the dexos approved is now with the mobil 1 synthetic I just installed this has GM additives to better protect the engine from sludge and other engine deposits which they say causes damage to the newer GM engines like the 5.3L AFM .

Again all I am saying is you use a blended synthetic oil with additives to protect the engine. the oil your using is not cheap ! I would not call it conventional engine oil .

the reason his MPG was that bad is the tire size used. should be 265 75 r16 load E type tires .

also remember the taller/higher you make the vehicle the MPG goes down the tubes.....
