Do I need to strip the chrome?

I am building a Fujimi GT40 Mk2 and the chrome wheels are incorrect for the build; they need to be gold. Do I need to strip the chrome and then primer and paint, or can I just paint over the chrome? Thanks.

Like MidMazar has already suggested, it's always best to strip off the chrome to give your new paint coat better key.

I agree with the guys, but experiment a bit, try this, mix clear yellow and smoke, try it on one wheel, maybe you will like the effect, just spray slowly, layer by layer, when you think you need one more layer...stop.
