Decanting Tamiya TS paints

Hey all,

I've seen a bunch of tutorials on Youtube on how to decant paint from Tamiya TS spray cans, but does anyone know how long can you keep these paints in a glass bottle for?

And does the same go for the TS-13 clear gloss? I'm going to decant one but I'm wondering how long I can keep that in a glass bottle?

I got some pictures of how I did it. Here's a regular pipette cut to fit the nozzle, then wrapped with tape so it stays put.

And here's the TS-13 clear in an 18ml bottle. I'd estimate this is about 1/3rd of a spray can. You can see the TS-13 is still a little bubbly (this was 10 min after decanting) so it still needs to sit and gas out for a bit.

They tend to dry up quickly. Make sure the jar lid is as tight as possible. You'll prolly have to thin it next time you use the paint.

It all depends on the bottle you keep it in. As MidMazar said, be prepared to add some Tamiya lacquer thinner when you spray- but be prepared to do that no matter how long it's been since you decanted.

I have some decanted TS that was decanted at least three years ago, that looks perfectly viable- just needs some thinner.

Good to know, since I have 5 more brand new TS-13 cans laying around :P

@hd221813: That's exactly how I did it!

Re: Decanting Tamiya TS paints

The problem is the seals on re-used paint jars. They deteriorate over time, and then they don't seal out the air, and the de-canted paint dries out. I tried cutting some out of thin cork, but once the bottle is shaken, they fall apart.

One of my local hobby shops sells empty bottles, but I hate like heck to pay $1.25 for an empty bottle!

Does anybody know where to get quantities of caps - or better yet, seals - for 1/2 oz. bottles?
