Power upgrade before launch?
As far as i know, the SLR is supposed to be released with a 5.5l V8 which develops 557bhp. Now i read in a magazine that the SLR's power output will need to be upgraded in light of the release of uprated versions of the SL and S classes, which are rumoured to have 612bhp... so to remain the ultimate Benz, theres speculation that the SLR will have to at least match this power figure. The hp war gets crazier and crazier

I saw that in evo too
some customers only care about whether they are buying THE most powerful Benz ever, not the best power to wieght ratio, which is what matters. |

evo indeed...
to go slightly off topic, i enjoyed the other supercar article enormously, i.e. the Carrera GT. Too much techno babble, but the thing looks incredible, and even the pic of the chassis looks magnificent, i could have never thought that to be possible... about the SLR power hike, youre right, its a shame that people want to have the most powerful car, ignoring power to weight, but then it's a predictable thought pattern. if you want the ultimate benz, why should a "lesser model" be more powerful? Makes sense to a simple mind. |

Official output of the SLR will be 626bhp/780NM from the 5.5 V8. That'll be enough to bring the SLR to 62mph in 3.8secs and top 210mph. Sources from Supercars.net.

supercars.net is not mercedes benz though. all mercedes themselves have said is that it should comfortably outpull the enzo and carrera gt. i doubt they will release an official figure until the car goes on sale.
