Learning about cars

I don't know much about engines and would like to learn more about them. Also, I don't have many resources like friends or family to teach me. I basically want to be able to diagnose minor problems and fix them. What are the best resources? (Books? Adult Education classes?)

Re: Learning about cars

I'd recommend a class if one is available in your area.

Otherwise, I'd highly suggest purchasing a quality service/repair manual for your vehicle(s). I'm not too fond of Haynes/Chiltons ones, as they don't have a whole lot of detail to them. Helms Inc. has many different manuals for many different cars, and IMO, they are the best ones. A quality service manual will tell you pretty much everything you'll need to know, from troubleshooting the problem, to fixing the problem yourself.

Of course, nothing beats real world experience. Books and classes won't teach a lot of things, but they are a good start.

Re: Learning about cars

I got a job changing oil part-time at a dealership, I watched and helped other techs and I learned a lot. I also checked out automotive repair books at the library. Learning takes time. Also there are many things to be learned from the computer, sites like this and others can teach a lot.
