alternative flocking anyone?

isnt there any other home made method to make flocking for carpets?
I dont have any at home and cant find one aroudn in the color I like.

checked some nice tutorials in the forum:

but they use anyway something already done.

Just wonder if there is a way to make something realisting with "emergency" stuff

I use felt paper from local hobby stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. Make a template, cut out what you need. Before putting it in, soak in water and 15 seconds later peel off the paper backing. There will be some backing left that can be removed the same way, but at that point its optional since the material will be thin enough at that point. At that point its ready to be glued in place. I will post pics in my latest WIP

grind up some florist's foam (or whatever that thing is caller where you can stick stems onto it and holds water) and then sprinkle them on a surface with white glue, then scrape off the excess once dry. it has to be ground real fine though.

so okay, this isn't something that can be used in a common emergency (who else stocks up on them? hahaha) but still, it's an alternative

Hey Paolo!

You can use ordinary wheat flour (Vetemjöl på svenska). You put down some enamel clear varnish like Humbrol or similar and gently blow the flour from your hand onto whatever is getting flocked. It´s quite messy and should really be done outside. I´ve tried it a couple of times with pretty good results.
When dry, primer and paint like ordinary. Preferably with airbrush to prevent the paintbrush from ruining the finish.

Paolo, take a look in my California build, I use vaccum cleaner filter material and it's really satisfying to me.
I also used some in my GT3, running WIP link is in the tribute thread.

I use an embossing powder. It's real fine and works great as carpets or the material on the dashboard of a race car.

Another option is moleskin- self adhesive felt used to cover up blisters. Cut it to whatever shape you need, color it (paint, ink, and even markers work great), and remove the backing and stick it in place.

I use self adhesive velour from arts and crafts shops used for making the lining in jewelry boxes.

If I'm in a pinch I'll simply use carpet samples from Home Depot or the like.

Sure it may be a little out of scale . . . but nothin' looks like real carpet like REAL carpet!. . .

very limited colour range but I've used these quite often.

It takes quite a few coats to get good coverage but it gives a nice texture and also takes to be sprayed different colours afterwards quite well too although you do lose some of the furriness.

I've given up on flocking as I always made a mess with it in some way or another.
Came up with the idea of using baby wipes instead, and with some white glue and a gentle shower with the airbrush it's possible to get whatever colour you want.
Take a look at my Impala build and see for your self how I did it and how it came out.
I was really surprised of the look of it, almost like a scale carpet when painted.

Hi there,
Greeting from Trinidad and Tobago. I have used Rustoleum Textured spray paints. They can be airbrushed after drying for the color you want. Just mask the areas you don't want to paint with masking tape and as a substitute for liquid masking, I use Elmer white glue(PVA glue). Hope this was helpful.

I recently have been using embossing powder with very pleasing results.

however, I had forgotten I had used paper towels once before until proosen mentioned the baby wipes trick.

Below is the carpet in my cobra. I used paper towels, the expensive kind, "Viva" as sold here in the United States. I got a flat paintbrush, some elmers glue all, and painted it down (kind of like paper mache) and then painted it flat black.

I think this would only look good with black as lighter colors will highlight the inaccurate texture, but maybe it is worth a try with some other colors. As I say that, I did it with my very first model, too. A 33/34 ford that I have pics of.

Either way, it might be worth a little experimentation.
