Engine swap

I have a chance to buy a 95 Monte Carlo with engine damage.
Cylinder head dropped a valve. Instead of messing around with the
old one, who knows what engine other than from a monte carlo i can drop in?
I was thinking there must be some interchangeability from other models.
Would even love to go up in displacement. Who knows what fits and what doesn't?
Can I for exampe drop in a 3.8 l from a buick? what about the tranny?
What should I look for?
