Sway bar replacement
Grand Prix 2000....broken sway bar...
Got a DORMAN Part # 927100 complete sway bar replacement assembly, with bushings, an excellent aftermarket kit. This bar is much sturdier than the original. What surprised me though is that where the original ends were almost flat to the ends, this replacement, installed according to the markings on the bar, has a significant bulge upwards that interferes with the tie rod , though only at extreme turning position and with suspension totally extended (which is the case with the car jacked up in the air)..... ![]() I would have thought the curve near the end should have been downwards precisely to clear the tie rod.....which would suggest the markings on the bar were inverted (inverting left and right would invert the bulge downwards...)..... However, there is a very remote chance that in actual "normal" driving, the conflict condition described above could exist....once the car weight is at rest on the wheels, the clearance is AOK... ANy comments on that...?

Re: Swar bar replacement
Check out the link below and read to the end, which may show that your bar is labelled wrong or installed upside down .
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...90#post6939890 the link starts you around the middle of that intrigue thread where the bar labeling error came up. Edit. looking again at your pic, it does appear that the end links bolts are in upside down. The extra length of the bolt shoud be pointing up and not hanging down below the control arm where it may snag on something. cheers

Re: Swar bar replacement
Thanks...excellent link: obviously others have been "intrigued" by similar situation.
I will advise son he may have to switch the bar over....and by the way, clear the bolt extensions out of the way...

Re: Swar bar replacement
the linkbolt in the photo;beside being wrong way 'round; appear to be over torqued.
the proper torque is 17 ft lbs. |

Re: Swar bar replacement
Funny...I contacted DORMAN about this...and they say "contact between swaybar and tie rod is not a problem.....".......given the rare conditions required for its occurrence.
...anyone heard of Murphy's law ? About "overtorquing" the linkbold...yes..probably...but that was a way to increase clearance between tie rod and sway bar....

Sure..... it's ok for suspension and steering components to bang together at the most critical incidents. Nice, in a high body roll avoidance turn and the sway bar contacts tie rod end preventing or hindering steering. Unbelievable stupid advice.
