help with 4 wheel drive

ive got a 96 ram 2500 v10 and when its in 4 wheel the front end growls and grinds but makes no noise when in 2 wheel and im lost every thing looks fine and im lost as hell

If driving on good or wet pavement in 4x4, the difference in the tire diameters will try to bind up the drive train since it's all locked together.
In dirt, mud, snow and/or ice, there's enough wheel slippage to keep the drive train from binding.
