Cool [911 Tribute] 993 Turbo (Italeri 1:24)

My entry into the 911 tribute is the Porsche 993 Turbo. It's the very last air-cooled 911 and my favorite car of all time. Some day I will own one!

Anyways.. this kit is the same as the Revell version (which is a rebox of this one). Apparently it's quite a rare kit, but I was lucky to be able to find one about 7-8 years ago.

Here's the box (not my picture):

I started by correcting some of the fitment problems. First of all, the sideskirts that are glued on are not right near the rear wheel arches. As you can see on the original car, they are flush with the wheel arches instead of sticking out:

So that was sanded down. However, there's a groove underneath that needed to be filled up. As I don't have putty, I took a lid of a "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!" cup and cut out a very small strip and glued it on.

That's now drying and waiting to be sanded down.

Next, the mirrors don't fit properly. I cut a larger hole where the mirrors are supposed to be attached and glued them in. Of course, I cut the hole a little too big and again had to fill this up with a tiny piece of plastic:

The front bumper comes loose easily so it need some support:

So here's how she stands at the moment, waiting to be sanded down and some primer.

For the body color I was thinking black, like the one in the picture above

Stay tuned!

Good start! wheels on this model are not aligned in the rear axle.

Re: [911 Tribute] 993 Turbo (Italeri 1:24)

While the body is undergoing some putty work (yeah I bought some putty ) to fix a bad looking panel line, here are some shots of the chassis, brakes and suspension parts. As you can see I weathered the underside of the chassis a bit with some sandpaper (have yet to do the flat black parts).

More soon

Looking to build this one stock. Though may have to go with the 996 wheels instead.

Yeah the Tamiya 996 Carrera wheels are supposed to look better. The Italeri ones are indeed pretty small.

I think I found it somewhere on this forum but now I can't find it anymore. If you're not cool with me using it I can take it down?

Re: [911 Tribute] 993 Turbo (Italeri 1:24)

no no, it's fine.
I was just in that little-bit-shocked phase because I'd completely forgotten about taking that photo.

Anyway, I've mentioned it to another member who built (or rather, started building it a while ago) that the kit isn't 100% accurate.

The biggest flaw is that the chassis is the wrong one; it being a simple re-use of the older chassis used in the 964 cars. If you're an accuracy nerd, the Tamiya GT2 kit chassis fits under the body.

The second smaller flaw is that the main body shell doesn't have the wider rear wings.
It's only 1mm on either side when scaled but if you add them on, it makes a big difference to how it looks.

The head lights could do with replacing too and again, the Tamiya kit has good replacements.

Of course, there's the wheels.
Wrong size and too small.

Other than that, you might want to check how it all fits together before you fix the interior tub to the chassis plate.
If I recall, the rear part of the chassis has to fit over the engine bay's hinge part and this can't be done if it's all been fixed together.

Re: [911 Tribute] 993 Turbo (Italeri 1:24)

Thanks, very helpful tips! I'll be sure to do some serious dryfitting before glueing things together. Don't really care about the chassis as you won't see it anyway

I noticed the radiator over the engine doesn't really fit, so I'll have to figure something out for that. Also, there are no headlight buckets supplied in the kit so I'll have to scratchbuild something for that or salvage them from a previously built kit.

The wheels are definitely 2-3 scale inches too small, but unless I can find some separate wheels I'm not buying a whole new different kit just for the wheels.

It's not the best kit indeed, but it's the closest one to an accurate 993 Turbo. I'm wondering if the Revell kit is truly a 100% re-box or if it did fix some of the Italeri's flaws (like the headlight buckets) though..

Anyway, engine is done:
