Focus hatchback lock mechanism

I have an 05 Ford Focus ZX3 (3 door). The hatchback lock mechanism will not release the hatchback when the activation button on the dashboard is pressed (the vehicle is equipped with only the anti-theft ignition). The key still releases the lock mechanism from the exterior. Although, when the hatchback is in the open position, the lock mechanism activates when the button on the dash is pressed. It is my understanding that if the mechanism still activates in the open position, then the lock mechanism as well as the fuse and relay are in good working order. What could be the problem of the hatchback in the closed position not releasing when the button on the dash is pressed?
