What are some of the top questions to ask when buying a used car from someone unknown?

I know the year, kms, type of fuel, etc.........but is there anything I should ask in particular?

Ask if the car has ever been in an accident. Ask if there have been any major mechanical issues with the engine or transmission, and if they were fixed or replaced.

Beyond that, it's best to bring someone with experience, with you to look at the vehicle. Let them take it for a test drive, to listen & feel for any abnormal issues in regards to the engine, drivetrain, suspension, and steering. They should also check out the body of the car for any excessive rust or damage in general.

If you can't get someone to go with you, find a local garage you trust, and ask the buyer if you can take the vehicle to be checked out by a professional. If they say no, then leave and find another vehicle. If they are ok with it, have the shop check out the car for you. I've seen many cars that looked and ran perfectly fine, but once on a lift, showed their true colors. Dented & disintegrated undercarriage, torn rear subframes, bent & damaged suspension components, rusted through brake or fuel lines, etc. I've seen cars that looked like they were incredibly clean & in mint condition, but upon closer inspection, should have been towed to a salvage yard and turned into soda cans.

Good advice. I'd also want to look at the car's service records too - to make sure it had been serviced properly.

All good answers, you should also do a visual check on the driver door Vin sticker and make sure it matches the Vin on the dash.
