Vin # question

I am going to get back to my old cars days. Give up on motorcycles. I have been looking at some 62 Impala's SS so they say. I looked at a vin# decoder website and they said that the first number is the year, and the second 2 are the model. Most I have seeing is a 218 which according to website that is a 62 sports coupe. They say a SS should be a 214. One guy is selling one that he said was a SS because it has the handle bar on dash, but the serial number is a 218. Can anybody help me out, I am confussed.

Steve
