shapeways 3d printed wheel

I thought I share this with everyone. I just received my 3d printed wheel for my rosso NSX project.

i used the strong and flexible plastic since it was cheapest for test fitting.
Its not smooth at all and you can see the layers. I believe the fine material will have very smooth surface.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

You've solved it! I have been letting this kit sit at the back of the shelf until I could figure out how to find some good, aftermarket wheels for it! Shapeways? This is a great idea!! Your wheel looks fantastic. Are you going to have them make all 4 or will you get only one and cast the others? I'd be interested to see how this plays out.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

thx guys.
The fine detail material is quite expensive almost 2x the price of this.

I might just make the faces and have machine shop make 4 barrels if its cheaper.

The rims will use tamiya enzo tires. I see the new porsche cgt will be out soon and maybe it has diff tires. I hope they are smaller.
Oh yea you can use the brakes and seats off the enzo. Seats are big so u need to mod them to sit lower.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

Nice, I like how 3d printing is starting to become affordable. If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost for the material and labor to make the wheel? There should be more aftermarket companies making 1/12 wheels, there really is no selection out there.

BTW hopefully shipways and similar companies will elevate our hobby for the future.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

I use the Frosty Ultra Detail and you still have to sand smooth a little bit.
That stuff drinks primer thought.
Lots of prep work required.
All in all, not too bad.

I am casting them in resin to then clean up the resin a little easier.

I hope this helps!

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

Here's my work, printed by Shapeways; a differential for the 1963 King Cobra. First image is the piece as designed in computer. I used Sketchup, a free and easy to learn CAD program. Second image are two pieces printed in ultra frosted detail material. One is as it comes from Shapeways, other is with a bit of primer. Those fins are .016" wide, the detail is incredible. Price is $2 for material + $5 handling charge + shipping. The pieces are about .04" X.06" X .06". Guys - with this technology, your only limit is your imagination. You can make anything.

That first image was the wrong one, it was uncompleted design.

Yes, as Pico (Ettore) says, the limit is your imagination.
Pico was the one who got me started on this.
I have seen neat possibilities from Pico, Mike Lawrence, and Jaykay with this stuff.
It blows the doors of possibilities wide open!!!!!!!

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

these were casted from a shapeways prototype i bought my wheels are all 3 piece makes cleanup real easy, i only use frosted ultra detail and when i draw my wheels i try to keep the polycount over 50k. and set my deviation to .0005

this was my first attempt before i found out about polys and deviations, the monoblock was destroyed.

the wheel on the right after some 320 sanding and primer. its currently in production this also marked the end of the one piece wheel for me. every wheel im producing from here on forth will be a 3 piece design its cheaper in the long run as fas as casting goes

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

Here is a picture of the wheels that I will be casting.

They are untouched at this point.

Frosty Ultra Detail.

Lownslow, can you elaborate on the sealer you mention? Are you just using a clear as a sealer or what? Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
