LS1 engine mount ideas... input appreciated

Eric's chassis pedestals were further back than mine (4.6 vs. 5.0) so the 4.6 mustang mounts won't work for me. I've come up with the following two ideas using Jeep CJ7 poly mounts.

First idea - requires counter-sinking one of the adapter plate bolts.

Second idea - Would this put stress on the chassis pedestal?

Thoughts?

Don I actually have a bunch of those Penske pics printed out in the garage; that exact one included. They completely re-designed the chassis mount and I don't want to do that. If I were going that route I'd just use my Corvette mounts and re-do the chassis to accept them.

Re: LS1 engine mount ideas... input appreciated

Brian,
I have no experience in this issue, but looking at it I think the first is better.

The primary static issue is supporting the weight close to center of mass with weight bias toward the rear so the trans mount is loaded and doing it's fair share of support. Either way, the weight forward will increase a little. I don't think you've moved it much so I'd guess that is no big deal. If you wanted to check that, hang the assembled engine and trans at the centerline of where the chassis support is relative to the engine block. It should be hanging trans low. To measure the weight on the trans mount put a scale under the trans mount and lower it until it is setting at the installed angle.

The primary dynamic load is the engine rotational torque. I think the ridged plate with the mount centered on the chassis brace will minimize any twisting of that support. Since the flexible mount is pretty much lined up with the two rear engine block mount bolts, I think the twisting force on the mount will be tolerable. Checking the integrity of the mounts regularly should be added to the race prep checklist. Penske obviously had the most ideal solution, but it represents a major fabrication and alignment task.

I like your ideas.

Mike

After much trial and error the engine mounts are done. Used a Prothane poly mount for a Jeep CJ7 and was able to make an adapter plate to use the existing pedestal on the chassis.
