Squeaky Brakes
2004 TB EXT. Replaced pads on all 4, installed new hardware kits front & rear, the anti-rattle clips even had the deluxe black coating on the back (mounting) surface to reduce noise. Occasionally squeaks under light braking at low speeds, such as approaching a stop. About 1 out of 4 stops it does this. Semi-Metallic pads. Irritating noise. Never had this happen before, put same brand & style of pads on my truck, no noise. Any ideas will be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Squeaky Brakes
Rotor condition?
Pads properly burnished?

Re: Squeaky Brakes
Were rotors turned or replaced? Sliding pins lubed?

Re: Squeaky Brakes
Did not turn or replace rotors. Did lube pins/sliding contact surfaces. Did not burnish pads, my thinking is that process went out the window with "arcing" drum brake shoes... It almost sounds like something embedded into one of the pads, to me. Looked them all over, nothing obvious. (Other than the metallic fragments made into the friction material. Wondering, could a badly shaped or oddly-situated piece of that metal possibly cause the noise)? Should I try "burnishing" the pads? (If so, how)?
Also, are some of the products at parts stores, such as "Disc Brake Quiet", worth trying? Thanks again, -Jim.

Re: Squeaky Brakes
This is almost always caused by an incompatible pad to rotor surface finish, you could take 220 grit and try cleaning up the rotor surface both sides, also a lite clean of the pads and do the bedding of the pads process, all that info is online or do a site search, or these are poor quality pads and a lousy rotor surface.

Re: Squeaky Brakes
this is common problem I have had years ago. when the new pads are installed they will make squeaking sounds just before a stop.
I use some 220/120 grit sand paper on the rotor surface orbital rotation then wipe off with some paint thinner. then I coat the back of the all brake pads [the metal backing plate] with some antisieze paste. when the pads start to move when coming to a stop you will not hear them move inside the caliper , which is the sound you now hear. over time they will wear in and this movement will not occur. using the sand paper and antiseize I do even if the pads rotor are new. many have had this issue and used my method with success.. |
