'03 Regal has a P0742 code...help!

Hello,
My husband just bought this car from a local used car dealer and now I have this code according to my OBD2. The deal is I have to find out what to do with it while my husband will do it for me. He's a pretty smart cookie but he doesn't know where to start.

Here's the background. It's got 172,000 miles on it. There's no previous history from dealer at all. When the code came on it started to hesitate in a way like when you have bad spark plugs.

I have read the two previous threads about this code and I guess we should start with ATF change along with the filter since we have no idea what was done previously. Is there anything else my husband should be investigating? I would rather unload the car and keep driving my '96 Corsica. Any help at all will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Start with the fluid change and clear the code. If it resets, there were problems with the TCC solenoid also. The side cover on the trans would need to be removed to replace it.
