help with my 93?

I have just inherited a 93 altima from one of my roommates. She says it has a half a tank of gas but wont start. I asked if it clicks or tries to start she said no but all the interior lights come on when the key is turned. I know a little about cars but not enough to troubleshoot this problem without a guideline. I can't take it to a shop because allot of places don't treat women like men. Plus I'd rather get greasy and do it myself. Any help would be amazing. I was thinking it could be the starter or maybe a wiring problem. Am I way off?
