code 36 (high resolution pulse failure)

Just pulled a code on my 94 Chevy Caprice and it was code 36 (high resolution pulse failure) What this mean?

this would indicate that the pulses from the cranksensor can not be properly compared to the cam .

check the connections/wiring to/from the distributor/pcm.
5 volts goes to the distributor. this must be solid .if intermitent you would get this code also.

could be defective distributor/pcm .

since the engine runs it is most likely the wiring.

you had all this work / parts replaced because the engine ran poorly from the start correct ?

Well, you did replace the distributor.....the distributor creates a hi and lo resolution signal......if the code wasn't there before, all things being equal, could be the distributor.....uh, oh......

You need a scan tool to diagnose this before pulling it, which is a nightmare....only hope is it's a connection problem....

As Tech II said, this car has no crank sensor it has high and low resolution optical sensors in the distributor.

Sometimes the female pins in the opti end of the wiring extension can get loose and cause a bad connection, worth a look anyway.
