Question TPMS sensor and winter tires

I am looking to get a set of winter tires for our 2008 Taurus Limited FWD.

It has stock 18" rims so I was thinking of getting 17" rims along withs - 17x7.5 215/60 17

I would need to get a TPMS sensor as well but I am new to all this. I believe the stock system has a band and sensor mounted inside. I have noticed their are OEM sensors with the valve that may be a simpler option. Such as the Dorman type that are less expensive. Has anyone ever used the OEM valve type TPMS sensors? Requirements?

Re: TPMS sensor and winter tires

If your Taurus came with the band sensors, the valve stem variety will not be compatible with the TPMS system in the car from what I understand. You could check with the tire store to be sure, but I've not heard of anyone who's successfully "upgraded" from the bands and had it work. Hopefully someone will respond and prove me wrong.
