Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
I tried to clear coat (enamel lacquer) a piece covered with Alclad Chrome and it made a reaction like bubbles and ruin even the plastic piece after I removed all the coats. Kinda melted the surface of the plastic and made it like orange peel. Any ideas? Or I should not be clear coating alclad chrome? I'm now affraid to even clear coat any Alclad colors. Maybe should I use an acrylic clear coats? Any suggestions? Thanks and have a great day!

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
Yes, use Alclad 600 Aqua Gloss, which is designed for clearing chrome parts. I've tested it and it works. Maybe another water-based clear would work, but I haven't tested any others.

I just read Alclad's website and mentioned to use acrylic clears.

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
If I use an acrylic clear or valclad 600 over the alclad chrome, can I then put a 2k clear on it if I want the best clear finish on the piece? Don't you think that the acrylic clear is working as a barrier between the 2K and the chrome to avoid any reaction? Or it will penetrate the acrylic clear? Can anyone help on this? Thanks!

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
you can't be a lacquer over an acrylic clear, i'm pretty sure. it will eat it up.

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
2K clear isn't lacquer, it's urethane. I've used it over enamels with no adverse reactions..

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
You are correct... is a two part urethane.

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
Future is the most neutral non-reactive clear there is. It is a good barrier for all paints. I have used alll types of lacquers, primers and other types of paint over top. The only thing is some water based acrylics over Future or visa versa can cause cracking. If you use SPAZTIX Chrome it is much more durable than ALCLAD and may not need a clear coat. It also does not have the blackish cast from using a black base like ALCLAD. I have switched and won't be going back to ALCLAD for chrome finishes.

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
I've used Gunze H30 gloss clear over Alclad Polished Aluminium successfully and Zero 2K on top of that.
H30 will still dull Alclad shine a bit though. Is SPAZTIX Chrome available internationally ? I'm in North America, any sources in this side of the pond ? |

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
I didn't even know alclad has a clear, good to know. The only thing i've noticed when cleared alclad chrome a few times it made it less shiny. But maybe because of the clear i used.

Re: Can I clear coat Alclad Chrome?
I did these wheels with SPAZTIX. They were white plastic. Your local hobby shop should be able to order it or go right to there website.
