97 2.2 timing chain and components?

hi i finnally got the oil pan off well not really its hanging i guess u gotta take the exhaust off to get pan off
but i got the timing cover off

and broken parts fell out other then the chain

there looks to be plastic broken off the lower part of this and there is like a metal pin in the plastic side ways

is there a kit to put a new whatever its called in?

is there steps on how to get the chain back on etc
i need a break down or something
this is really a sunfire engine but since no one really replys in sunfire and the cav uses the same engine i hope its all the same

also i need to take off the sprockets i guess is there a pin or something to lock the gears so i can un tighten nuts or whats the trick for that

Re: 97 2.2 timing chain and components?

i found out that the part is the tensioner thats broken

so once i get a new on of those

i also got a timing chain but it says 2004 is that ok do they all use the same chain?

so what are the steps do u need to pull the gears off? do they come off easily?

and how do u line up the gears where you set them?

Just a suggestion, but you may want to look for a Haynes manual for some guidence. You are gonna want to be sure to get this repair done right or you could create more problems. Parts stores usually sell the manuals, or check the library!

Re: 97 2.2 timing chain and components?

ya that will help better then what i had, where you get those pics and stuff or you have to be a member?

also i had read you put timing marks at 12:00 position but this works too

ill try that later today if i get the parts

now question i gguess i have to drop engine a bit as there is no way you can get a puller into the gear since the side wall is there

easier if i had a hosit at home LOL

guess i have to get a torch gauge too but helps i guess to tighten and loosen bolts screw driver in the gears

if you line then up like that could they not be off a bit? or is that ok

but ya helps ill have to go down to canadian tire see if they have the tensioner

how tight you tighten the tensioner bolts ad where exactly on the tesnioner when i do get it you put a nail or pin

i going to see where to get a sprocket installer or crank shaft gear installer

and hope a claw puller is good enough

Re: 97 2.2 timing chain and components?

Hope you didn't bend a valve rotating the cam by forcing it, because the crank shaft should have been 90 degrees left or right of timed position(this puts all the pistons at the halfway point).....

You never do a job like this without a manual, and you read it several times BEFORE you start the job....
