2001 Taurus brake light (Again!)

I had an old thread about this but never went anywhere and I'm reposting because I have a new direction I want to take My brake warning light stays on all the time although my parking brake works fine and my resevoir is full. The switch also seems to be working. I'm thinking maybe the level sensor switch in the resevoir is bad. Does anyone know how that resevoir comes out? Or do I have to buy the whole master cylinder? Knowing Ford it's probably a one piece unit. If I can ever get the damm plug off the sensor is there a way to test it to see if that is the problem?
This was related I think to my ABS and traction control going belly up at the same time. I was finally able to pull the connector on the abs module to see if there was any corrosion but was as clean as a whistle so the ABS module is definitely DOA. Anyway a discussion for another day and another post.
Thanks

Re: 2001 Taurus brake light (Again!)

To be clear, you're trying to determine what's causing the red "BRAKE" light to light up, correct, not the amber "ABS" light?

The switch for both the low fluid level and the parking brake lever are normally open switches, and will trigger the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) to light the BRAKE light if they close (to ground). You could check to see if you have a solid path to ground at the appropriate GEM terminals, or disconnect the switches and test for continuity across them. If you have continuity across either of them to ground, that is the likely source for the BRAKE light being on.

I'm not sure of the switch is easily replaceable or if you are expected to buy a new master cylinder. Sounds like a good question for the parts store.

Re: 2001 Taurus brake light (Again!)

Yes Rod we are talking about the brake light, NOT the ABS light, which went bye bye over a year ago. I'm guessing that system is dead. If I can ever get that plug off without breaking it I'll do the continuity check. I've tried two times to get it off and given up in fustration. Can someone please answer why the good people at Ford would design a plug with the holding clip facing down instead of up? For christ's sake it's the little things in life that sometimes make all the difference.

Thanks
