Re: 2AZ-FE head gasket repair
I wonder if owners can avoid this problem by doing some preventive maintenance.... like keeping the coolant level up or something simple.

Re: 2AZ-FE head gasket repair
This link is for repairing the threads in the block for the head bolts that are being pulled right out on some of the earlier 2AZ 4 cylinder engines. It envolves using helicoil inserts.
I just tried the link and it worked for me. If you are interested you may want to try the link again. Mike |

I see this on about 75% of the 4cyl Camry engines. The threads of the block come with it.
Also happens on honda/Acura 3.2 v6 engines as well as caddy Northstar engines. I don't recommend the inserts myself but it is proven to work if done properly.

What is your recommendation for a fix?

Used engine or new short block

Re: 2AZ-FE head gasket repair
The above fix is meant for home mechanics, more so than would be an engine replacement or rebuild. I think you're right on what is the best fix.

Re: 2AZ-FE head gasket repair
I'm not sure if a used engine would be the best solution as the block headbolt threads could let go shortly after engine replacement. I have read a post on a different fourm to someone who had this happen to them shortly after they installed a used replacement engine.
As far as a new block goes I suppose that would be worth it if the new block addressed the previous design flaw with the block headbolt threads. joet/camry
