Painting grill

I was curious if anyone has painted their plastic grills. I purchased a black plastic and would like to paint it to match the color of my truck. I planned on using Rustoleum Plastic Primer, then the base color and finally clear.
Does that sound like it will work? I've not painted plastic before.

first you wash down the part with some dish soap. then wet sand with 600 using a mixture of dish soap/water. rinse/dry wipe down with some paint prep cleaner/wax/silcone remover. use the plastic primer not too much. then top coat when the time is correct with the product your using.

You need to sand the surface so you get a proper bond. top coating too soon can case lifting. the cleaner need be used to insure the primer will not lift/rinkle.

Re: Painting grill

I'll also add that painting at the right air temp and in the shade without wind (< 5 mph) results in a better finish. The sun and wind will dry out the freshly applied paint too quickly for it to spread and level out, leaving a rougher surface. 75-90 degrees air temperature with 50% or lower relative humidity is typically best, but check the paint can for recommended conditions for application. For the color coat, this isn't quite as critical as you can always spot sand it to smooth out the defects, but the gloss topcoat will remain uneven unless you take a polisher to it after it is dry.

Re: Painting grill

Good points, looks like I lucked out weather wise. Supposed to be in mid 80's Saturday.

Thanks
