Muffler tape?

Hey! I have a 99 Grand Prix GT with 3.8 about 135000 miles. I really have no money right now and need to fix the resonator leak which has split at the seam. Will muffler tape work? Is it safe? I just need it to get me through about 6 months till finances allow me to repair it correctly. Thanks!

Re: Muffler tape?

Muffler tape will work if applied properly just don't try to get it through a safety inspection because it won't pass. Of course you could always remove the resonator and fit it with a piece of pipe. Would be too expensive especially if you can get someone to weld if for free.

Re: Muffler tape?

Well I tried the muffler tape and I guess I applied it wrong. It still sounds like crap. I may try the exhaust repair paste stuff for $5. Anyone have any experience with that stuff?

Re: Muffler tape?

Here is the problem......with the break along the seam, and depending on how long and how wide the break is, determines if the tape works......main problem is expansion and contraction.....have had some success cutting tin cans and placing them over the hole and then taping over the both of them...

Cheapest way out, is cut the break out......then, with two adapters(for connecting the pipes, one side fits inside the pipe the other goes outside the other pipe), a piece of pipe and clamps, that would be your easiest, longer lasting, fix....

Re: Muffler tape?

When I had a hole in my resonator, I just had it taken out and replaced with a straight pipe. Of course you'll need to have your PCM flashed to remove the error code you'll get to pass emissions if need be

Re: Muffler tape?

There will be no error code with the removal of the resonator since the resonator has nothing to do with emissions. There is no flash needed.

Also, I highly recommend AGAINST straight piping instead of a resnator. It just sounds BAD. If you must take the resonator out, put a glasspack in its place.

When I installed the high flow cat when I took out the resonator is when the error code came.

Re: Muffler tape?

What you want to do is go to the hardware store near the furnace and duct parts area and pick up a piece of sheet metal that will be big enough to cover the seam and wrap around a little. Then you get a couple large hose clamps that are used to hold signs to poles. like about 5 inches in diameter. You can gang two clamps together to make it even bigger. Then you get that muffler paste repair goo. A couple of tubes of it. You cut the piece of sheet metal to size and bend it by hand to match the curvature of your resonator. Then you gang up the hose clamps and get them in there and verify that they will tighten down around it okay. You then remove it all, open up the goo tubes and spread a good coating of it around on the inner surface of you pre-formed cover. Then go back under and wrap it all together. It works great. On my car, the heat shield came loose at the same time, so I used it.

You got a code due to the high flow cat, not because of the resonator. Resonator has nothing to do with emissions and there are no o2's associated with it.
