Cool Volksrod

Here's something I've been planning for awhile, and w/a show coming up w/a VW theme, I figured now was as good a time as any to get this one done.

Inspiration comes from Hank Young Hotrods Volksrod, a car that I have seen once at our local Caffeine & Octane. It was by far the coolest car there that day! I only got one or two photos due to the very harsh sun, but found a few others on the 'net.

I'm using the color scheme and basic layout, but I'm sticking w/VW suspension and wheels. I have what I think are the right front/rear tires for the big/little look. I'm using Tamiya's '66 as the basis for the model. I need to scrounge up some vintage headlights, I'm going to model it w/the roof closed (using a Polar Lights piece).

My only photo of the model so far is a shot taken for an article, but this model is being built "for me" so I'll share along as it gets done w/o worry over publication. I'll have fun w/this, it's not going to be a replica but it should look a lot like this one. No top chop, fenderless, stretched wheelbase in front, heavy on the "attitude". So far I've cut off the fenders, and roughed in the front fender liner areas. I have to do the same to the back before primer. Hopefully by this time next week it is in finished primer.

This is great! I love all your builds, but your non-magazine custom jobs are always so much fun, so perfect. I can't wait!

Re: Volksrod

Good progress over the weekend, wheelwells roughed in, suspension modified, more work ongoing. Need to drop the front end more into the weeds. Rear tires from a Monogram '55 Chevy (1/24 scale with whitewall inserts). They fit the VW wheels perfectly. Polar Lights hubcaps...for now. Not sure if I'll use the Tamiya Beetle units or not.

Re: Volksrod

Since lowering the front end, I had to also relocate the steering tie rod. I drilled holes w/my Dremel, and test fit. It works, but I need to lengthen the tie rod. I'll be hiding the tie rod and the upper torsion bar that intruded into the spare tire well behind a custom-fit styrene cover. Out of sight, out of mind...

The lower holes will be cleaned up a bit and hopefully will be where my headlight mounts will fit. I'm down to modifying the tie rod, cleaning up the suspension, custom-fitting the headlights and taillights, and making the dual exhausts. The rest is painting, just a tiny bit of putty/priming, and OOB building (interior left stock, as well as the engine). I will pop open the side quarter windows.

Re: Volksrod

Hope you don't mind....couldn't help it.

PS: Cool as hell, I like it! I'm waiting for a model of the MY13 Beetle to come out with the new Heritage wheels to use those on something similar.
