93 Lumina - Help Please!!!!

I have a 93 Lumina with the 3.1 in it and 176,000 miles. I went to go to the store today and it started squeeling bad and couldn't turn the wheel. Got the car back down the driveway and raised the hood. The pulley on the bottom of the engine seems to have come out a bit and caused the belt to slip off. I believe this is the pulley for the cam shaft, but am not completely sure. I can tap the pulley back on, but once I start the car again it comes right back off. I tried tightening the bolt that holds the pulley on, but the bolt doesn't move either way. Is this something that can be fixed? If so, how does one go about fixing it? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it the large pully on the very bottom? Thats the crank pully, or also called harmonic balancer. Sounds like the rubber insulation has broken on it. If that is the case, it will need replaced.

Yes, it is the big pulley on the bottom. Is this something that I would be able to change myself or should I have it towed to a garage and replaced? I see some parts stores have a harmonic balancer puller kit (which I think would be good to have). Then others have a harmonic balancer kit and a sleeve. I'm just not sure what all I would need to do to fix this poor car.

Really depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Its not a tough job, Its made easier with air tools. Call around for a quote and see what it would cost for a shop to do it and decide from there.

Re: 93 Lumina - Help Please!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I have called around and got a price of $235 including the tow to have it replaced by a shop. I'm thinking it will be easier to go this route than trying to do it myself since I don't have air tools and I may end up breaking a bolt or something trying to get it off.

Seems like a fair price, and will save you the headache in case something goes wrong!
