Exclamation 1994 Cavalier RS 3.1 MultiFunction

My grandfather gave me this car as my first car for free because it didn't start, I could keep it or sell it as metal. I was able to get it started, because one for the wires leading to the fuel pump relay was damage and all i had to do was replace it. Now that I have it up and running he brought it to my attention that I can't go very far with the car because it overheats and turns off. The other day i was at a stop light idling and it started stuttering, the light turned green and i took off. When i arrived to the next light i came to a full stop and the engine cut-off, I put it in neutral and it started up, but as soon as i put it in gear it jumped forward and turned off it did this alot and i finally just revved the rpm to 6 and put it in drive i peeled out and it was stuttering as i drove home running stop signs and lights, any time id stop the engine would cut off. I removed the plastic cover infront of the radiator hoping that was the issue, that maybe it was causing it to overheat, but it wasnt. My uncle is a mechanic he came and took a look and saw that the idle control was brand new and turned the car on and un plugged it and nothing changed in the motor he said it should have either turned off or started to stutter i need help guys i really dont know what to do and my father refuses to help me because he thinks this should be a learning experience for me -.-

Re: 1994 Cavalier RS 3.1 MultiFunction

Is this a 3 speed tranny?

If yes, check fluid level and condition.....now, remove the harness going into the tranny.....your TCC solenoid may be locking the tranny.....

What happens is, on a cold engine, there is no problem.....then after tranny warms up, the TCC solenoid sticks......it's the same feeling you get with a manual transmission, if you come to a stop and don't push in the clutch.....

Now the car restarts right away, but as soon as you put it in gear, it stalls....if you wait about 10 minutes or so, the solenoid unsticks itself, and when you start the vehicle, and then put it in gear, it doesn't stall.....but when you get it up to speed, the TCC will apply and stick again.....

As for overheating, is the coolant level ok in the radiator and reservoir(check when cold)....also check coolant fan operation(does fan come on when A/C is turned on?)......

So if these are the same symptoms and it's a 3 speed, try disconnecting the front harness going into the tranny, when it is cold.....if it desn't stall anymore, the TCC is your problem.....
