98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

My 98 GTP is having an issue with burning fuel pump relays and I cannot figure out why. The relay gets incredibly hot just from 5 minutes of drive time. I replaced the fuel pump resistor yesturday and the problem still continues. Has anyone had this problem before?

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

On a 3.8 Supercharger, two relays are used.....I don't know if they are different numbers, or use the same number relay for both......

One is the speed control relay, the other is the fuel pump relay......the fuel pump relay provides reduced power to the f/p through a resistor.....the speed control relay, bypasses the relay, and provides full battery voltage to the f/p, when more fuel volume is needed(during boost from the S/C)....

Which one is getting hot? Does it fail after it gets hot? Are you using OEM relays? What was the original symptom or problem?

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

Where would the speed control relay be located because on my gtp, the speed control relay port is empty in the engine compartment fuse box? The #14 port is for the fuel pump relay and that is the one that is getting hot and burning up, the #15 port is the fuel pump speed control relay and it is empty? I thought it was odd that the speed control relay port was empty but I have had the car for a year and a half now and this problem only began recently and I dont believe the speed control relay was ever even in the car while I have owned it? Since the car has started burning these relays, I have been using BWD relays from advanced auto parts.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

here install this and it bypasses the relay issue.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

Will this also allow the car to run in the two speeds like it is supposed to do or will this just run the car in one speed perminatley?

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

It will run like normal, it was designed to bypass the issues you are having. I have it installed on my comp g to increase fuel pump voltage because it eliminates just about all of the factory wiring.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

Does this kit use any relays? Otherwise, it is constantly running at the higher voltage? Will that shorten the life of the pump?

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

yes there are relays, and better wiring. here is a better pic of the kit.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

I have installed the intense racing hotwire kit to my car and I was wondering if the car is supposed to run without the fuel pump relay located in the engine compartment fuse box?

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

yes, the kit completely eliminate all of the factory relays and stock wiring.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

Alright, so I screwed something up. It was difficult to wire because I had bought a new fuel pump with the flat 4 pronged conector and had to wire that conector head into the wiring system where the square 4 pronged conector that was originally on the factory fuel pumps was located. It said there was a problem that was often occuring with the old one so they decided to replace it with this new flat conector system. Well when I got the intense racing kit, the kit came with the old sqare conector and it wouldnt apply to the fuel pump I had in the car so I went ahead and wired it into the system that was on my car and the car still wont run without that relay in it with the way I currently have the bypass wired. I know its a mess but if you have any suggestions on what to do next, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

I am not sure what is going on! Regardless though, if the new pump fit into the factory wiring it would fit with the kit. does your car run with the factory relay installed? Look carefully at the instructions and the wiring of your car, maybe you missed something. here is a link for the instructions online http://intense-racing.com/Merchant2/docs/102152.pdf . If you can post pictures of the area and parts in question I can look for any issues there.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

It bypasses the resistor, I believe you still need to have the relays installed. The kit bypasses most of the common issues that fail on our cars. make sure you installed the ground to a clean bare peice of metal and the coat over it with paint or di-electric grease.

Re: 98 GTP fuel pump relay problems

Not only are the instructions you linked me to different than the ones intense racing sent me, but the whole kit is different from the one that was shown in the picture that you linked to earlier in the thread? The instructions you linked me to make so much more sense but it now appears that the kit I got from intense racing wouldnt even apply to the car if I followed these instructions you gave me?
