Clunk/Click in reverse

Hello all, I have a 2002 gtp and when putting my transmission in reverse it 99% of the time make a clunk/click noise. It doesn't do it when putting it in drive or anything else like that. I was told by a tire shop while getting new tires that my lower motor mount is worn pretty bad and needs replacing and that may be the reason for that sound. When I put it in reverse it doesn't slam or anything like that but it does move the transmission underneath a little bit. I had my wife shift it while I looked under the car to see it. Does anyone think that the motor mount is the culprit or is there something else that needs to be adressed? Thanks

I just replaced my lower mount and eliminated my clunk. If it's bad, replace it and go from there. I made a mistake and used an "Anchor" brand mount, it went bad almost immediately. I highly recommend OEM GM mounts. I replaced with The GM mount and all is good so far.

JonJon, were you able to replace it yourself? I've been told you need something to hold up the engine while you replace it and I only have a jack and a couple jackstands in my garage so not sure if it's something I should try to tackle.

I did replace it myself. I supported the trans and oil pan together with two 2X4's, the length of the two pans only. Unbolted the upper mounts "dogbones", remove the two bolts holding the mount down, then slowly lifted with floor jack under the 2x4's supporting the oil pans until there was clearance to remove my old mount and slid in the new one. The new one can only install one way and it's a good idea to dig all the dirt/crud out of the bracket before installing. The tricky part was lowering the engine onto the two mount studs but was able to maneuver the engine by myself and slowly lowered onto the new mount. There's a write-up for the trans mount on this website but not sure if there's one for the lower mount.

Okay thanks a ton. I will have to check it out and see if I can do it myself. I'm not exactly a master mechanic so I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm not very experienced in car repair myself either however, after doing the research, I was confident I could tackle this and it worked out well..Hope the same for you...

You can order a solid oe type mount that eliminates most of the failure rates. (if you get one from autozone it is a crap shoot, they mix up the two so you have to shake the mount to see if there is any fluid inside) I have used the anchor solid ones with no problems. The DEA brand solid engine mount part number is A2796 ( http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...441304-1650045 ). Also the solid trans mounts that the performance places sell can be bought in stores. Just get a 2002 Buick Regal trans mount and it will fit. The DEA HD mount is the way to go ( part # A2818HD http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...315370-3007715 ).

X2, I agree regarding the solid type mount. If and when I need to replace, I will purchase the solid mount...

Just out of curiosity can you guys tell me exactly where the mount is?

You can see and get to it through your passenger side wheel well. There's a U shaped bracket that fits over the top of the mount. Take your wheel off and you'll see it just below the pulley that's right on top of it.
