backflush cooling system

Dear All:

I was at walmart yesterday and found a backflush kit from prestone. I am wondering the advantage of backflush the cooling system. According to my haynes manual, we can flush the cooling system by just disconnect the upper radiator hose. However, to backflush, people cut the inlet heater hose and connect a T-tube. So I really want to know the advantage of backflush before I decide to do it.

Also, can I just drain and fill the cooling system with prestone extended lift? This products says that it can be mixed with any coolant.

I am driving a 98 honda accord ex. 4 cyl.

Thanks,
harry

Re: backflush cooling system

I have been told that back flush may remove some bigger particles if the system has been poorly maintained. I would not do it because I am afraid that the pieces may clog smaller passages and create more problems. I would rather use chemicals to dissolve the residue.

Regular flushes eliminate the need for the back flush or chemical use. But that might be only my opinion on the topic.
