03 Focus Rack and Pinion Leaking

Hello,

I am working on a Focus with a leaking rack and pinion. It was brought to me with "lost power steering" as the only description. It quickly empties the power steering fluid resevoir.

Upon jacking it up I found that the only place it is leaking is out of the inner tie rod boot on the passenger side.

Are the output seals on the rack replacable by a front end shop? If so, does the whole rack need to be pulled?

Thanks,

Brandon

Re: 03 Focus Rack and Pinion Leaking

Well, the answer to my questions are:

1. At least in my area, the rack is not servicable.

2. Yes, I had to pull the rack and replace it, but it really wasn't that bad of a job. It took a while but it was pretty straight forward and I didn't have a hard time fitting my hands into spots to get it done.

I replaced the ps pump, the rack, both tie rod ends, and a sway bar link. It cost about $400 in parts from Autozone.
